Survival Swim Course
Swimming is a fundamental skill for all water-based activities.
While learning to swim as an adult can feel challenging, it is never too late to begin, and taking this step is a commendable decision.
According to the World Health Organization, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury-related death worldwide. Learning to swim later in life not only improves personal safety in and around water but also increases confidence in everyday situations, such as visiting lakes, rivers, or coastal areas while on vacation.
Swimming also creates access to a wide range of enjoyable activities, including snorkeling, freediving, and mermaiding—all of which can enhance both fitness and recreational experiences.

Challenges to In-Water Participation
Many people are interested in learning a new in-water activity such as scuba diving, freediving, or mermaiding. However, some cannot swim, have a fear of water, or are weak swimmers who lack confidence in aquatic environments.
Ideally, these people would participate in a formal swimming program conducted over an extended period. Such programs can help participants progress from basic swimming techniques to advanced or even competitive-level skills, depending on their personal goals. However, many people do not have the time, access, or opportunity to complete long-term swim training.
Introduction to the SSI Survival Swim Program
o address this need, the SSI Survival Swim program has been developed as a short, focused program that introduces people to water safety and comfort. The program teaches fundamental water survival skills, including the ability to float calmly and swim short distances with control and confidence.
In addition to encouraging water safety, the Survival Swim program prepares participants to meet SSI’s Water Fitness Evaluation requirements. These evaluations are mandatory components of SSI Scuba, Freediving, and Mermaiding training programs. By completing the Survival Swim program, students will be better prepared to begin their in-water training with the foundational skills and confidence needed to progress successfully.
