Planning a 14 day special trip to the Philippines next January on a Aggressor Adventures liveaboard. for some great wreck, reef, muck diving for 12 or more experienced divers. This extended itinerary combines the Philippines’ most iconic wreck and reef diving regions. On 24 September 1944, a squadron of US bombers appeared above the Japanese fleet hiding in Coron’s natural harbour and opened fire. The bombers’ fierce attack was viciously victorious, sinking ten ships in just fifteen minutes. Now with a new lease on life, these ships are well-preserved underwater sites, a boon to scuba diving in the Philippines and contributing to Coron’s world reputation. This itinerary also includes diving at Apo Reef Natural Park, the largest coral reef in the Philippines, located in Occidental Mindoro, which is also the world's second-largest contiguous coral reef system after Australia's Great Barrier Reef. This protected area features two large atoll-like reefs, a deep channel, and is a biodiversity hotspot with abundant corals and marine life, making it a premier dive destination and a potential UNESCO World Heritage Site. I have doved Apo Island in the past and it is simply fantastic.
In Batangas, diving around Verde Island delivers adrenaline-filled currents, large schools of fish, and impressive pelagic life. Verde Island is a volcanic island located in the Verde Island Passage and is known as the "Center of the Center of Marine Biodiversity" due to its incredibly rich coral reefs and marine life.
Guests will also visit Anilao, often called the birthplace of Philippine diving, famous for its rich marine biodiversity, vibrant coral reefs, and unparalleled opportunities for underwater macro photography.
Select itineraries may also visit protected areas near Malajon and Dimipac Islands, offering a rare opportunity to observe dugongs in their natural habitat. All diving is conducted from tenders.
If penetrating deep into wrecks is your passion, then Coron really is heaven on a stick. We’re talking 170m-long ships! With good planning and a knowledgeable guide, you can make the most of them. You can pick your way through the passageways; penetrate down to lower levels; and find engine rooms with massive boilers, workshops strewn with tools and kitchens replete with pots and pans.
Coron Bay lies on the northern tip of the island of Palawan, the most westerly of the Philippine islands, but is easily reachable by plane from Manila. Back in 1944, it was a 14-hour steam for the Japanese convoy, whose leaders hoped Coron Bay was beyond the range of US aircraft in the region. However, within less than a day of their arrival at Coron Bay, Vice Admiral Mitscher, onboard the aircraft carrier USS Lexington, ordered the 120 planes into the air and they set off to the very limit of their range. The first targets the Helldivers took on were the biggest – the Akitsushima, which carried seaplanes and was heavily armed, and the Okikawa Maru, a 170m-long oil tanker. In no time, the Akitsushima was sunk and the Okikawa Maru fatally damaged.
Soon after, the Olympia Maru and the Kogyo Maru were under attack, and both went down with the loss of many lives. The Iraku, a provision ship, went down with flak guns blazing, and even the army auxiliary supply ship Kyokuzan Maru – hiding on the other side of Busuanga Island – was sunk before the attackers finally had to head off.
